Celebrating excellence - the women-founded and -led companies that work with Altree

March 2024

As we observe International Women's Day and embrace the significance of Women's History Month, Altree Capital takes a moment to acknowledge and applaud the remarkable women driving growth and leading some of the most exciting companies in various sectors across the African landscape. Our partnerships represent our dedication to empowering and uplifting women-led and oriented businesses and underscore our commitment to fostering environmentally conscious initiatives.

Valerie Labi, Co-Founder and CEO of Wahu! Mobility, a pioneer in electric mobility, recently inaugurated Ghana's premier electronic vehicle plant. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a monthly production capacity of approximately 200 e-bikes, aligning with Ghana's long-term commitment to advancing e-mobility and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Wahu! is on a mission to revolutionise urban transportation, offering sustainable mobility solutions that resonate with the global emphasis on eco-conscious living and net-zero targets. Valerie’s is focused not only on innovation and environmental impact but also ensuring diversity, affordability and job creation for women and youth, partnering with UNEP on Women Delivers a pilot project for women riders in Togo.

Sneha Metha and Jade Oyateru co-founders of Uncover, a digitally enabled women's wellness and skincare brand, have emerged as a transformative force addressing the specific needs of Africa, the world's fastest-growing yet most underserved beauty markets. The recent launch of the I Am Restored Blemish Control Serum marks a milestone in Uncover's journey. Beyond mere skincare solutions, Uncover envisions itself as a catalyst for empowering individuals across the African continent to care for their skin with the attention it deserves.

Sneha and Jade also opened Uncover's first Experience Hub in Lagos, an immersive space a testament to Uncover's commitment to fostering communities where shared experiences and empowering conversations redefine the narrative of beauty. The 'I Am Restored Serum' itself is a meticulously formulated product, created in Korea and tested in Nigeria and Kenya, prioritising the specific needs of melanin-rich skin.

Joanna Bichsel, Founder and CEO of Kasha Global a femtech platform specialising in digital retail and the last-mile delivery of health care and FMCG products, coupled with its integrated credit options and other services. Kasha's unique positioning caters specifically to the lower class, high-volume, underserved customer group, reaching even the most hard-to-reach areas. Kasha, was founded in Rwanda in 2016, expanded to Kenya in 2018 and recently incorporated in South Africa. The investment injection is set to propel its platform and enterprise services further across the continent, with plans for expansion into West Africa in 2024.

Joanna’s leadership has been instrumental in Kasha's rapid scaling and strategic expansion across African markets. Kasha is a pioneering force, leveraging technology to improve access to essential health products, with a focus on women and girls, in particular in hard-to-reach areas. Joanna emphasises the company's exponential revenue growth over the years, driven by strong market demand for quality, affordable health products.

Ofelia Burton, co-founder of Burton & Bamber, plays a pivotal role in the success story of the dried fruit and healthy snack brand. Co-founded in 2015, the company embarked on a transformative journey by shifting its focus to the mango value chain and establishing a fruit-drying and healthy snack business. Ofelia's influence is particularly evident in the innovative approach of sourcing directly from local farmers and fostering inclusivity in the mango-drying venture.

Burton & Bamber, known for its exceptional dried fruit products, has not only penetrated prominent retailers in Kenya but has also expanded to international markets. Ofelia's contribution exemplifies the impact women entrepreneurs can have in reshaping industries and creating sustainable business models. Recently, Burton & Bamber celebrated the launch of their innovative product, Crackies. This extruded sweet potato snack, aimed at tapping into the mass market, reflects the company's commitment to offering diverse and affordable snacks. The introduction of Crackies aligns with the company’s continuous efforts to bring nutritious, locally-inspired products to consumers, marking a dynamic chapter in the company's journey.

Katherine Milling, the CEO and co-founder of Nature's Nectar, pioneers a transformative approach to beekeeping, promoting sustainability and gender inclusivity. Historically, beekeeping was perceived as men's work, but Katherine is reshaping this narrative. In Nature's Nectar's innovative model, hives are managed and harvested by zone lead farmers, fostering inclusivity for women who now constitute half of the company's farmer base.

Overcoming initial concerns about female beekeepers, Nature's Nectar collaborates with conservation organizations, distributing top-bar beehives to enhance honey quality and curb deforestation. By offering premium prices for harvested honey, the company not only ensures sustainable income for rural farmers but also exemplifies how inclusive businesses can drive gender equality and empower women. Nature's Nectar, in conjunction with Altree, stands as a beacon of responsible business practices, demonstrating how corporate collaborations can create a harmonious balance between economic prosperity, environmental conservation and social empowerment.

"Our collaboration with the U.S. Government’s Prosper Africa initiative exemplifies Altree Capital's commitment to driving impactful ventures in both sustainable mobility and women's health. The synergy between Prosper Africa and Altree Capital has not only facilitated investments in Wahu Mobility, Uncover Skincare and Kasha but also underscores our dedication to making strategic investments that contribute to positive social and environmental outcomes."
